** Environment and Climate Change Canada Weather Observations in Wikimedia Commons
------------------------------------------------------------

The project “Environment and Climate Change Canada Weather Observations in Wikimedia Commons (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=59714e7e83&e=a2dec13318) ” was led by Wikimedia Canada (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=e73ad012e7&e=a2dec13318) and funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=63c1d0154d&e=a2dec13318) (ECCC) from June 2019 to March 2021. This project allowed the import of 100 years of meteorological data from 8,756 weather stations across Canada into Wikimedia Commons, for a total of 4.5GB of data and 26 million values, and their reuse in other Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia.

Following this project, Wikimedia Canada, in collaboration with Acfas (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=3e8ee23de4&e=a2dec13318) , welcomed two interns during Summer 2021, thanks to the scholarship program “Data Storytelling” (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=06279ba631&e=a2dec13318) from IVADO (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=04d5a2622d&e=a2dec13318) .

The articles from those internships were published on Wikimedia Canada’s website (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=715d18b4cd&e=a2dec13318) :
* Climate inequalities that make you insomniac (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=b10d5f1c79&e=a2dec13318)
* Agricultural resilience lies at our feet… In the soil (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=05bee2c8f9&e=a2dec13318)

By visualizing certain data chosen from this project, the two interns, Laurence Taschereau and Ali Sabzi, contribute to increasing public awareness about global warming and its effect on life in Canada. They chose to focus on the issue of heat island in Quebec City and agriculture in Montérégie.

Indeed the interns, being free to choose their topic, considered that presenting data through a small-scale story would appeal to readers more than giving a global picture of the situation. The only constraint of this internship was to highlight the dataset from ECCC.

** Future of the Programs Committee
------------------------------------------------------------

The Programs Committee of Wikimedia Canada (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=7df07b3147&e=a2dec13318) is currently in a period of redefinition. This is why the monthly meetings were cancelled for the rest of 2021.

Starting in 2022, we will begin a series of activities to collectively reflect on how this committee should function and what its goals should be. In order to prepare for these activities, we would like to hear your opinions and suggestions about these questions:
How can we foster integration and networking among volunteers in the Wikimedia movement in Canada?
How can we better equip the community to organize events and benefit from Wikimedia Canada's support (logistic, monetary, technological, etc.)?
What name could better represent this idea of integration and networking?

We are inviting you to share your ideas through this survey (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=565523a39d&e=a2dec13318) . This will only take a few minutes. You can also share your comments to us by email (mailto:info at wikimedia.ca) .

Your concerns, your experiences and your interests are at the heart of this collective brainstorming.

If you would like to meet us to discuss the form that could take these brainstorming sessions, if you would like to be involved in the process, or if you would simply like to discuss with us about this, do not hesitate to write to us (mailto:info at wikimedia.ca) !
