WIKIMEDIA CANADA
JANUARY 2021
NEWSLETTER

Happy new year from Wikimedia Canada team!

While 2021 is still in its "stub" stage, the entire Wikimedia Canada team wishes you all a Happy New Year. Perhaps 2021 will be a featured year. One thing is certain: the quality people who contribute to 2021, just as they do to the Wikimedia projects, ensure that there are greater chances of going from a stub year to a featured year. I therefore propose to make 2021 a featured year by inviting the whole community to positively contribute to it. Together, let's do our best to get closer to the perfect year.

>From Wikimedia Canada's team, wishing you all a healty and happy new year!

Lëa-Kim Châteauneuf, President

** Wikipedia celebrates 20 years
------------------------------------------------------------

On 15 January 2021, Wikipedia celebrates 20 years. Indeed the English Wikipedia was launched in 2001. Furthermore, a few days ago, the English Wikipedia reached one billion recorded edits.

Since its creation, the free encyclopedia showcases perfectly the idea that collaborative work allows the building of a remarkable project. After 20 years, Wikipedia continues to hold its promise to make knowledge free and open by and for everyone around the world.

On the occasion of this important celebration, Wikimedia Canada wishes to thank and be grateful for the efforts of everyone who made Wikipedia possible: the volunteers who share their knowledge, the people who organize social activities and contribution campaigns, everybody who made donations to maintain Wikipedia, and all the developers who ensure the good functioning of everything.

Already, members of Wikimedia Canada gave several interviews in French to Canadian medias about the 20 years of Wikipedia:

** #1Lib1Ref
------------------------------------------------------------

#1Lib1Ref is an international campaign happening from 15 January to 5 February with the goal to add references to Wikipedia. The objective of this campaign is to encourage librarians, as well as everyone with a passion for free knowledge, to add references to Wikipedia articles.

In Canada, every year since 2018, we organize a friendly competition among Canadian institutions, such as libraries, archives, galleries, museums, and universities. This year, the competition will be between the different provinces and territories.

As such, we are inviting you to participate in the 2021 competition happening from 15 January to 5 February! If you want to join a provincial team, you can contact Michael David Miller (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=28d4b6a71b&e=ee298e979c) or Lëa-Kim Châteauneuf (https://wikimedia.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=29c1f1c45dc917d8c6939fa4c&id=13243316bc&e=ee298e979c) .

** 100 years of meteorological data in free access
------------------------------------------------------------

The project “Weather Observations of Environment and Climate Change Canada on Wikimedia Commons” realized by Wikimedia Canada and funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) aims at importing on Wikimedia Commons a century of Canadian weather data. The goals of this project include to reuse, to promote, and to disseminate our meteorological heritage in Wikimedia projects.

As part of this project, there will be an online presentation in French on 27 January from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (Montreal time). This is an ideal opportunity to come learn more about this project which is a first in the world!
